Full-time PhD Studentship - Social Marketing

In 2004 a Department of Health White Paper on Public Health highlighted the potential benefits of social marketing to improve the impact of programmes intended to influence health related behaviours. However, for social marketing to be effective it is not adequate to simply apply commercial theories and techniques. If social marketing is to fulfill its promise in delivering health improvements, it will be necessary to draw on expertise in analysing, planning, designing and implementing both commercial marketing and health improvement programmes. The purpose of this project will be to critique existing approaches to health interventions (including those that are and those that are not labeled as social marketing) and build a framework for improving the process and content of social marketing programmes. The student will have considerable scope to determine the context and focus for the project in collaboration with the appointed supervisors

Prior to application, potential PhD students can email or telephone Dr Sally Hibbert, Associate Professor in Marketing. Contact: sally.hibbert@nottingham.ac.uk or tel: +44(0)115 8467653

Full-time PhD Studentship - New Commissioning Arrangements

The White Paper, 'Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS' proposes to transform commissioning in the English NHS, replacing 152 Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) with groups or consortia of general practices that will have responsibility for commissioning the majority of health care for their local populations. Concerns have been expressed that GPs lack the necessary skills to take on this function and commissioning mental health services had been singled out as a particularly problematic area. Evidence from previous reforms which gave GPs budgets for care suggests it is more difficult to bring about change in mental healthcare than other services. These reforms are being introduced in a changing NHS landscape. In particular, the recent White Paper proposals mean that the independent sector is likely to play a greater role, both in supporting GP commissioning consortia and providing care to NHS patients. The range and type of organisations involved in commissioning and providing mental health care for NHS patients is likely to increase therefore.

This studentship is concerned with examining the development and impact of the new commissioning arrangements in the National Health Service (NHS) in England. The project will focus on commissioning mental health services. The specific aims, objectives and design of the project will be developed jointly between the successful candidate and supervisory team during the first year of the PhD. This means that there will be some scope to shape the project in accordance with the background and interests of the successful candidate.

Prior to application, potential PhD students can email or telephone Professor Ruth McDonald, Professor of Healthcare Innovation and Learning (CLAHRC). Contact: ruth.mcdonald@nottingham.ac.uk or tel: +44(0)115 8230588
